Sept 18th 1976

The attendance was 63,486 on Saturday Sept. 18th 1976. It was the Arch Rivalry game at Faurot Field. Mizzou vs Illinois. Coach Al Onofrio led his Tigers out onto the Field. But the Tigers were not victorious. The lost 6 to 31.

I found this picture online from the game.

This is the ticket stub I have from the game. There isn't much to it but I think I paid 50 cents for it. Anyway thanks for reading!

Custom Creation

It's been a while since I have done a post. I'm sorry. I have lots of cool stuff to show but I just haven't been in the mood to scan anything or really do a blog even but I will get back to it on a regular basis soon.

My friend over at Royal Card Review makes really great custom cards.  I was bored so I thought I would give one a try. It needs a little bit of work but its a start. I modified an old Johnny Unitas card I saw online to make this one. Anyway thanks for reading. :)

Who you gonna play?

Sports team schedules are usually free and can be picked up almost anywhere. I know I usually get a few from grocery stores and I have even seen them at restaurants. I usually pick one up (if I don't already have it) whenever I see one no matter the sport or team.

The schedule below was probably given out free at the Insurance company. Its from 1939 and has both Mizzou and Wash U (in St. Louis) schedules on it. I got it off ebay a long time ago for a buck or two. It's probably one of the first MU collectables I ever bought. (It has nothing on the back so I didn't scan it). I doubt its worth anything but it looks pretty cool.

You got a lot of learnin' to do.

I got this book for Christmas to read to my son. He's 4 months this week so he has a lot to learn about Mizzou. I am sure this book will help, and its a nice addition to my MU collection. I didn't scan every page but this gives you the general idea. He also has a book similar to this one all about the Kansas City Chiefs. I am sure I will take him to lots of games of both teams when he is just a little bit older. :)

I have something else of my son's that I will share at some point. Thanks for reading.

Talkin' Quarterbacks - Part 1

Brad Smith might be one of the first "big name" quarterbacks that I remember from Mizzou. Since his time at the school Missouri has kind of become a quarterback mill. The card is a 2006 Fleer Hot Prospects Endorsements card. I got it off ebay at some point, and like it because it has his autograph.
I don't know a lot about the NY Jets but I did fly over their stadium once low enough to see it. (So I guess that's cool, I don't know ha.)

2005 SEASON
One of the most exciting players in college football who ended his brilliant Tiger career by leading MU to a thrilling 38-31 win over South Carolina in the 2005 Independence Bowl ... He led Mizzou to the win, despite the fact that the Tigers trailed 21-0 in the first quarter, and 28-7 midway through the second quarter ... The rally from a 21-point deficit marked the single largest come-from-behind win in Missouri history, as well as Independence Bowl history ... Ended the day with 432 yards of total offense, including 282 yards passing (1 TD) and 150 yards rushing (3 TDs) ... Completed 21-of-37 passes on the day, and added his 3 rushing scores all in the second half as MU rallied for the big win ... Hit TE Chase Coffman on a beautiful fade route in the corner of the end zone with just 20 seconds left in the 2nd quarter to pull MU to within 28-14 at halftime, then he led the way as MU didn't attempt a punt the entire second half ... Had scoring runs of 31 yards in the 3rd quarter, and added TD runs of 4 yards and 1 yard in the 4th quarter to provide the winning points ... His final game-winning TD was set up by his own 59-yard gallop that he made out of a broken play on the first play from scrimmage with the game tied and under 5 minutes left in the contest ... Ended his career ranked statistically as one of the most accomplished players in NCAA Division I-A history, as he held 69 different Mizzou, Big 12 and NCAA game, season and career records ... Holds the NCAA Div. I-A career rushing record for QBs, with 4,289 yards, and became the first NCAA Div. I-A QB to throw for 8,000 yards and rush for 4,000 yards in a career ... Ended his career ranked 4th on the alltime NCAA career total offense chart, with 13,088 yards, almost double what the previous MU career record was (6,640 by Jeff Handy from 1991-94) ... With 2,304 passing yards and 1,301 rushing yards in 2005, he became the 1st player in NCAA Div. I-A history to achieve the 2,000/1,000 mark twice in his career (he also did it as a redshirt freshman in 2002) ... Is one of only 3 players in Div. I-A history to have 4 seasons of 2,500 yards of total offense, and is one of only 6 players to have 3 seasons of 3,000 yards of total offense ... A true testament to the term student-athlete, he received his bachelor's degree in business administration in May of 2005, and is taking graduate level courses in 2005-06 ... Earned the prestigious National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award, which comes with an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship, and was one of 16 finalists for the Draddy Award, known as the "Academic Heisman" ... Earned 1st-Team All-Big 12 honors by the Associated Press as an all-purpose back, and was a 2nd-Team All-Big 12 pick as a QB by the league coaches ... Was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week twice during the year, for performances in wins over Nebraska and Arkansas State ... Also won national player of the week honors for his performance against the Huskers, as he led MU to a 41-24 win by gaining 480 yards of total offense, including 246 rushing yards and 3 TDs against a Nebraska defense which came into the game ranked 1st in the NCAA in fewest rushing yards allowed (65.0 ypg) ... Became only the 6th player in NCAA Div. I-A history to rush and throw for at least 230 yards each in a game ... Led the Tigers to 523 yards of total offense against the Husker defense that came into the game allowing an average of just 289.17 ypg ... Had 6 games with 300 or more yards of total offense, including efforts of 432 yards against South Carolina, 413 against New Mexico, 412 versus Arkansas State, 377 at Oklahoma State and 319 at Kansas State ... Led the Big 12 Conference in rushing, with his 1,301 yards and average of 108.4 yards per game (ranking 19th in the NCAA), and became the first QB to win a Big 12 rushing title ... Also became the first QB to win a conference rushing title since Kansas' Nolan Cromwell led the Big Eight in 1975 (1,124 yards/102.1 ypg) ... Also became the first Tiger to win a conference rushing title since HB Charlie Brown did so in 1965 (937 yards/93.7 ypg) ... Had a career-best average of 300.4 total yards per game, over 50 yards better than his 2004 per-game average of 248.9 ... Opened the season with 412 yards in leading Mizzou to 44-17 win over Arkansas State, as he tied a school record by throwing 4 TD passes ... Had 317 passing yards in that game, and rushed for 95 more as MU's new spread attack got out of the gates strong ... Broke the MU career rushing and passing records in game #2 against New Mexico, as he had 413 total yards, including 248 passing (1 TD) and 165 rushing (3 TDs) ... Threw for 193 yards and ran for 184 more at Oklahoma State, in leading MU to a 38-31 win on the road ... Was held to 72 passing yards in game #10 against Baylor, but still racked up 161 rushing yards and 3 TDs on the ground in his final Faurot Field appearance as the Tigers became bowl eligible with the win ... Broke off two 56-yard TD runs in the game, with the final one coming on a gutsy 4th-and-1 call from Mizzou's 44 yardline with just over 6 minutes left in the game and the Tigers clinging to a tenuous 8-point lead ... Closed the regular season with a strong overall performance, throwing for 248 yards and 3 TDs and rushing for 71 yards and 1 TD, despite MU's loss to the Wildcats ... Was responsible for an MU-record 102 TDs in his career ... With 284 points scored (45 rushing TDs/1 receiving TD/4 2-pt. conversions) and 340 points thrown for (56 TDs/2 2-pt. conversions), became only the 4th player in NCAA D-I history to throw for 200 points and score 200 points in a career (Rick Leach of Michigan; Antwaan Randle El of Indiana; Joshua Cribbs of Kent State).

2004 SEASON
Began the season as a top-10 Heisman Trophy candidate, according to most straw polls around the nation ... Wasn't able to stay in that race for the entire season, but still managed a productive junior year, as he accounted for 2,738 yards of total offense ... Ranked 3rd in the Big 12 Conference, and 27th in the NCAA rankings, with his per-game total offense output of 248.91 yards ... Had 2,185 passing yards, and threw for a career-best 17 TDs, which was just one TD shy of the MU single season record ... Threw for a TD in 9-of-11 games, and had 2 or more TDs 6 times, including 3 each versus Arkansas State and Baylor ... Had better success at stretching the field, as he threw for 8 TDs of 20 yards or more (60, 59, 51, 43, 35, 34, 31, 24), after having only 1 TD pass of at least 20 yards in 13 games in 2003 (48 yds. at Colorado) ... Had a hard time finding room to run, as Tiger fans had been accustomed to seeing in his first two years, and was held to 553 yards and 4 TDs on 165 attempts ... His per-rush average of 3.4 yards per carry was down from his average of 6.6 in 2003, when he rushed for 1,406 yards and an MU single-season record 18 TDs ... Despite the overall disappointment of MU's 5-6 season, he led a spirited effort in the season finale when the Tigers, playing for nothing but pride, won at Iowa State (17-14 in overtime) to spoil ISU's chance at their first conference championship since 1918 ... Was the dual threat of old in that game, as he threw for 150 yards, and his offensive line paved the way for a season-best 101 rushing yards and 1 TD ... Broke off a 36-yard TD on a QB read play around right end early in the 3rd quarter that marked his longest rush of the season ... His biggest play of the game could very well have been a tackle he made late in the 4th quarter after ISU picked up a ball ruled a fumble by officials after a Smith completion to Thomson Omboga ... With ISU's Steve Paris running in the open field, Smith raced through traffic to help haul him down at the MU 15 yardline to save what looked like a sure TD at the time ... His tackle with 2:04 remaining helped preserve a 14-14 tie at the time, and MU went on to win in OT after ISU missed a short FG attempt on the ensuing drive after that fumble ... Earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors for his part in the ISU win ... Opened the season with 233 passing yards and a career-high tying 3 TDs in the air against Arkansas State, and added 63 yards on the ground with 1 TD ... Threw for 224 yards and 1 TD and had Mizzou out to a quick 14-0 lead at Troy in game #2, before the Trojans rallied to post the upset win ... Bounced back with a solid effort in leading MU to a 48-0 shutout win over Ball State, as he had 213 yards passing and 2 TDs, and also rushed for 83 more and 1 score ... Made numerous big plays in MU's Big 12 opening win over previously undefeated and eventual North Division champion Colorado, as he had 265 yards of offense and 1 TD on the day in MU's 17-9 victory ... Tied his career high with 3 TD passes in game #5 as MU won at Baylor to move to 4-1 on the season ... Threw for 185 yards and a TD and ran for 52 and another score at Texas as MU hung tight before falling, 28-20 ... Was held to a season-low total offense output of 154 yards (96 passing/58 rushing) the next time out against Oklahoma State, as the Cowboys rallied from a 17-point 1st-half deficit to spoil MU's Homecoming ... Had 2 TD passes in the 1st half as MU built its lead ... Had a season-high 277 passing yards at Nebraska, but was held to just 25 yards rushing on 21 attempts, as the Huskers shut down the Tiger running game all day long ... Threw for 205 yards and 2 TDs and ran for 58 yards against Kansas State in game #9 ... Also caught a pass that went for 33 yards and a near TD that would have changed the complexion of the game that KSU ended up winning, 35-24 ... Had 262 yards and 2 TDs passing against rival Kansas, but was held to a career-low negative 41 yards rushing on the day by the KU defense, as his longest rush on 13 attempts was just 5 yards ... Was named Hon. Men. All-Big 12 by league coaches for the year.

2003 SEASON
Again proved to be one of the most dynamic and versatile players in all of college football ... Was the only player in the nation who ranked in the top-30 in the NCAA in points responsible for scoring (16th - 9.08 ppg), (19th - 14.15 ppg), rushing (20th - 108.15 ypg), and total offense (26th - 260.2 ypg) ... Ended the season with 1,406 rushing yards and an MU single-season record 18 rushing TDs ... Rushing yardage total was the 2nd-best in school history ... Led Tigers to an outstanding eight-win season, including a perfect 6-0 at home and guided MU to its first bowl appearance since 1998 ... Ended with an MU-record 3,383 yards of total offense (1,977 passing & 1,406 rushing) and just missed becoming the 1st player in NCAA history to throw for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season twice ... He accomplished the 2,000/1,000 feat in 2002 for only the 2nd time in D-IA history (2,333 pass/1,029 rush) ... His 1,406 rushing yards marked the 4th-highest single-season total by a quarterback in NCAA history, and was only 88 yards behind the record of 1,494 set by Air Force's Beau Morgan in 1996 ... His 291-yard, 5-TD rushing day against Texas Tech was the NCAA single-game high for yardage in the 2003 regular season ... The 291 yards rushing was also just 17 yards shy of the NCAA record for a quarterback ... Set MU bowl-game records for most total yards (251) and most passes completed (17) in 2003 Independence Bowl outing versus Arkansas ... Had Tigers playing for chance at Big 12 North Division title into game #11, and directed Mizzou to 8 regular-season wins for only the 3rd time since 1960 ... Also became the first MU quarterback to beat Nebraska since Phil Bradley in 1978, with MU's 41-24 win over 10th-ranked Huskers ... As of early November, was listed among top-10 Heisman candidates by Sports Illustrated, College Football News, and Fox Sports ... Also showed well in other prominent Heisman voter polls, as he ranked 4th in the Oct. 28th Scripps-Howard News Service Heisman poll, and was 7th in an Oct. 29th ESPN poll of college football experts ... Was responsible for 30 TDs in 2003 (18 rush/11 pass/1 receiving), which was an MU single-season record ... VS. ARKANSAS ... Had a game-high 251 yards of total offense (155 passing, 96 rushing) as MU outgained Arkansas 407-385 but fell short in the Independence Bowl ... Completed 17-of-30 passes on the night and rushing for 96 yards and 1 TD ... VS. IOWA STATE ... Led MU to 45-7 win over Iowa State by totaling 303 more yards of total offense, including a 195-yard, 2-TD rushing day ... Also completed 15-of-24 passes for 108 yards ... Scoring runs covered 19 and 64 yards, and he did not throw an interception for the 8th time in 12 games ... AT #19 KANSAS STATE ... Tough K-State defense held him in check statistically, ended the night with 181 total yards (155 passing, 26 rushing) ... VS. TEXAS A&M ... Had a workmanlike performance, with 136 yards and 3 TDs on the ground and 89 yards passing on a day where the Tigers didn't need to throw the ball much in scoring 45 points ... AT COLORADO ... Had another 380 yards of offense, as he threw for a season-high 278 yds. (29-of-42 passing) and ran for 102 more, marking the 2nd time in his career that he threw for 200 and ran for 100 in a game ... Had an uncharacteristic 4 turnovers on the day, but one was a disputed fumble near the CU goalline that should have been an MU TD, and another was a desperation Hail Mary pass from midfield that was picked off in the CU endzone on the last play of the 1st half ... VS TEXAS TECH ... Earned national player of the week awards from Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, USA Today and College Sports Report, among others, for his amazing day in leading MU to a 62-31 win over Texas Tech ... Also named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for the 2nd time in 3 games, as he upstaged Tech's much ballyhooed QB B.J. Symons, as he rushed for an MU QB-record 291 yards and a school-record 5 TDs (10, 27, 2, 41 & 61 yds.) ... Amassed a personal-best 419 yards of total offense, as he added 128 yards passing ... Led Tigers to scores on each of their first 6 possessions and sealed the game with his final 3 rushing TDs in the 4th quarter as Tech mounted a rally ... AT #1 OKLAHOMA ... Had 230 total yards against vaunted Sooner offense, and had game tied at 10 midway through 2nd quarter ... Had 26-yard TD scamper that tied game at 10 apiece ... VS. #10 NEBRASKA ... Named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for leading MU to historic 41-24 win which broke Huskers' 24-game win streak over Mizzou ... Burned the nation's top-ranked defense for 303 yards in total offense (180 pass/123 rush) and tied a school record by scoring 4 TDs (3 rush/1 receiving) ...Scored his 1st career receiving TD on a 47-yard throwback from WR and former QB Darius Outlaw in the 2nd ... Rallied Tigers to 27 unanswered 4th-quarter pts. to erase 24-14 deficit ... AT KANSAS ... Was held to career-low 95 yards of total offense in 35-14 loss (62 pass/33 rush), but accounted for both MU TDs, w/a 4-yd. run & 9-yd. pass that had MU ahead 14-13 entering 4th quarter ... VS. MIDDLE TENNESSEE ... Almost single-handedly willed MU to 41-40 OT win, as he engineered criticial game-tying TD drive to force OT then scored TD in OT to give MU the win ... Had 328 yds. of total offense (192 pass/136 rush) and accounted for 4 TDs (3 pass/1 rush) and also scored game-tying 2-pt. conversion on keeper with 1:17 left to force OT ... Game-tying drive was an 11-play, 73-yard masterpiece that started w/MU trailing 34-26 with just 5:11 left ... Accounted for 74 yds. on 73-yard drive (5-of-5 passing for 43 yds. & 4 rushes for 31 yds.) ... VS. E. ILLINOIS ... Had 3rd-most efficient passing day of his career, with a QB rating of 158.86 after going 26-of-33 for 236 yds. and 2 TDs ... Carried a career-low 5 times on the day for 35 yards as his running assignments were scaled back due to his mild concussion the week before at Ball State ... AT BALL STATE ... After a slow start, led MU to TDs on 3 of final 4 1st-half possesions, staking MU to a 21-7 halftime lead ... Was dynamite with his arm and legs, amassing 229 yards of total offense alone in the 1st half (117 rushing/112 passing) ... Was on pace for an amazing statistical day, but was held of action in the 2nd half after suffering a mild concussion late in MU's final 1st-half TD drive ... VS. ILLINOIS ... Turned in an efficient performance with a 12-of-18 passing day for 102 yards and 2 TDs, while rushing for a team-best 66 yards ... QB rating of 150.93 was his 3rd-best single-game rating in his 13-game career ... Saved his best for crunch time, as he took over the game and led MU on a game-winning 4th quarter drive that spanned 13 plays and 78 yards ... Drive began on MU 22 with Tigers trailing 15-14 with 10:36 left, and ended when he found WR Darius Outlaw in the endzone from 6 yards out with 4:12 left in the game ... Smith accounted for 59 of the 78 yards, carrying 6 times for 20 yards and was a perfect 3-of-3 passing for 39 yards ... He followed the TD by successfully running in a 2-pt. conversion on the old swinging gate play that originated at the 8 yardline after a procedure penalty.

2002 SEASON
Claimed virtually every conference and national freshman honor possible after a record-setting first year behind center ... Despite his youth and a rugged schedule, had Mizzou playing for a bowl berth into the final game of the season ... Made history by becoming just the 2nd player in Div. 1-A history to throw for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season ... Ranked 10th in the nation (and 2nd in the Big 12) in total offense (280.2 ypg), and finished the year with totals of 2,333 passing yards and 1,029 rushing yards ... Set a school record with his miniscule interception percentage of just 1.6% (6 INTs in 366 attempts), and in addition to total offense record, set MU quarterback rushing records and MU freshman rushing records for a game (213 vs. Oklahoma) and season (1,029) ... Ranked 8th in the Big 12 & 56th in the NCAA in rushing (85.8 ypg) ... Ranked 1st among the nation's freshmen in total offense, 1st in points responsible for (11.0 ppg), 5th in passing efficiency (117.3) and 5th in rushing ... Amassed 350 yards of total offense vs. Troy State, throwing for 213 yds. and 1 TD, and rushing for 137 yards and 1 TD ... His rushing TD was a 28-yard gem that came on 4th-and-1 when he ran a QB sneak, but spun outside after fighting for yardage, and emerged all alone running down the left sideline for the score ... Was impressive despite defeat at Bowling Green, as he threw for a career-high 334 yards and 2 TDs on 28-of-50 passing ... Was dazzling vs. Ball State, with 281 yards of total offense (176 pass, 105 rush) ... Named national player of the week by CNNSI.com, offensive newcomer of the week by ESPN.com, and was named Big 12 co-Offensive Player of the Week ... Was cool as a cucumber off the bat, as he calmly led MU to an 8-play, 77-yard TD drive in the initial possession of the 2002 season ... The Game's on TV

I don't get to see many football games on television let alone a Mizzou football game. But I always see the cameras all over the stadium and trucks behind the stadium in the south. Fans seem very excited to know the game is a "Television" game and use to get very upset when a game wasn't on TV. Now with the Mizzou switch to the SEC and the new SEC Network all Mizzou games are televised.

I bought this pass after the 2012 season was over from a guy who worked for FSN. (Fox Sports Network), I am not sure what he said he did but I think he was a camera man. I got it off ebay for a couple bucks (or less) because I thought it was an interesting collectable that almost no one gets to have.

I have been scanning lots of cool stuff I hope to share with you all soon. Thanks for reading!

Program Break

Today I am taking a break from showing programs to show something else. Two Mizzou (and in some people's opinion) NFL legends.

Roger Wehrli and Me (He's on the right)

Roger Wehrli was a two-time All-Big 8 player and was the Big 8 Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. That same year, he was a unanimous All-America selection.

At the time of his College Hall of Fame induction he held school records for career punt returns, punt return yards in a game, season, and career. He played in the Senior Bowl and was named to the 50-year Anniversary All-Senior Bowl team. Wehrli was a member of the first class of inductees into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.  In 1990, Wehrli was voted a charter member of the MU Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame.

                                                         Kellen Winslow and Me.

Kellen Winslow did not play high school football until his senior year. Until then, he was a self-described "nerd" who played chess. In college, Winslow played for Mizzou and was a two-time all-conference selection in the Big Eight and a consensus All-American in 1978. In 1999, he was ranked number 73 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players of all time.

Both Winslow and Wehrli are also in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Wehrli played for the Arizona Cardinals and Winslow played for the San Diego Chargers.  I met both of these players before two different Mizzou football games. Both were very nice and willing to sign and talk with fans. They each signed a ball for me.

October 11th 1952

It was about month before the presidential election, Dwight Eisenhower vs. Adlai Stevenson and your Missouri Tigers were home after a 26-0 shutout win the weekend before at Kansas State. Coach Don Faurot lead his team out onto the field to play against Southern Methodist. At the end of the day Missouri had 7 points on the board and Southern Methodist had 25. Missouri went 5 and 5 overall in 1952 with 3 home wins.

I got this program cheap off of ebay. I thought it was interesting to see all the old advertisements for local businesses, some of which I had actually heard of and a few that are still in Columbia today. I also enjoyed seeing the pictures of the team. (Click the pages below to make them bigger)

The page order got messed up a little when I went to post them but they are all there. Thanks for taking a look. I'll post something besides a program next time.
